Stem Cell Network

Supporting and building Canada’s stem cell and regenerative medicine research sector has been the raison d’etre of the Stem Cell Network (SCN) since its inception in 2001.  Its work has been supported by the Government of Canada from the beginning. SCN’s mandate is to act as a catalyst for enabling the translation of stem cell research into clinical applications, commercial products and public policy. In just over 15 years SCN has forged a national community that has transformed stem cell research in Canada, brought research to the point where regenerative medicine is changing clinical practice and established an outstanding international reputation. SCN has pushed the boundaries of what was a basic research area towards translational outcomes for the clinic and marketplace.


The purpose of this role is to assist in all aspects of communications for the Stem Cell Network. The Communications Specialist will be responsible for developing written content for various mediums and audiences. Key audiences include: the scientific community; media; government, and the general public. The incumbent will report to the Director, Communications & External Affairs and assist with the development of communication plans and strategies, identify and execute communication tactics relevant to corporate objectives, and assist with gathering and tracking data critical for reporting and measuring progress. The Specialist will also provide event management support, act as a liaison with members of SCN’s research community, media and members of the public.

Key Responsibilities & Accountabilities

  • Assist with the written and creative development of both print and electronic communication materials
  • Regularly prepare articles for SCN’s blog and monthly newsletter
  • Assist in the editing of corporate materials
  • Provide support in developing and executing on annual communication plans
  • Gather data relevant for annual reporting and measuring progress
  • Develop communication analysis documents on a quarterly basis
  • Manage media and contractor lists
  • Oversee the organization of communication files to ensure ease of access to key documents and research
  • Provide support in overseeing the proper implementation of SCN’s brand
  • Provide logistical support for events, including the annual scientific conference
  • Provide support in the development of the monthly newsletter
  • Engage with media and SCN stakeholders as required
  • Provide support with the management of the SCN website, and the website connected to the annual conference
  • Build relationships with counterparts in partner organizations

Knowledge Requirements

  • Knowledge of key writing principles for different audiences
  • Knowledge of web and social media practices
  • Knowledge of traditional media practices, including how to pitch to media
  • Knowledge of key principles for event management
  • Knowledge of Canada’s health research and policy environment
  • Knowledge of Microsoft Word, Power Point & Excel
  • Knowledge of Word Press
  • Familiarity with gathering data for reporting purposes
  • Familiarity with developing strategies and plans
  • Familiarity communication practices of Government
  • Familiarity with Canada’s research funding environment
  • Familiarity with the principles of planning and publishing

  • Bachelor’s degree in Communications, Journalism, English or equivalent post-secondary degree
  • 3 to 5 years of work experience in the field of communications or a relevant area

Special Conditions

  • Travel requirements are variable throughout the year, and will be required at the time of the annual scientific conference
