OTTAWA, June 12, 2017 – Cheryl Jensen, President and CEO of Algonquin College, has been selected as the recipient of IABC Ottawa’s 2017 Communicator of the Year Award.
“This award recognizes an Ottawa-based organizational leader who demonstrates excellence in the field of communications and acts as a champion for our community,” said Dominique Jolicoeur, President of IABC Ottawa. “Cheryl Jensen is a role model to all communicators and a trusted mentor to established professionals in our field.”
When choosing a Communicator of the Year, IABC Ottawa seeks a local business leader who:
- employs strategic communications to drive community growth
- uses communications for good
- acts as a trusted leader and mentor
- is not a professional communicator
Ms. Jensen embodies the COTY criteria all while abiding by IABC’s Code of Ethics. As the President of Algonquin College, she plays a significant role in shaping and inspiring future communicators. Under her leadership, students are well equipped to tackle the digital transformation needs we are seeing in the workplace.
Over the past year, Ms. Jensen has become a go-to source for advice and mentorship by many established communicators in Ottawa. Earlier this year she offered our community with insights on working effectively with CEO’s and provided advice on how to gain visibility and influence with the C-Suite. Ms. Jensen uses her voice to advocate for innovation and entrepreneurship in the National Capital Region. She is especially dedicated to advancing entrepreneurship within our indigenous communities. This past year she secured funding for the Algonquin College Institute for Indigenous Entrepreneurship which will help indigenous students build their businesses through mentorship, peer support and cultural connection.
“I am honoured to be recognized alongside such distinguished past winners,” said Algonquin College President Cheryl Jensen. “The Communicator of the Year Award recognizes the important role of communications in not just business and industry, but also in our everyday lives. At Algonquin College, we equip our learners with the tools they need to devise solutions for the future, and also the ability to communicate those ideas in the most effective way possible.”
The Communicator of the Year will be recognized at our season closer on June 20.
