“If you’re going to celebrate Canada, what better place than the nation’s Capital?”
On Tuesday October 27th 2015, IABC Ottawa had the pleasure of hosting a fireside chat with Mayor Jim Watson and the executive director of the Ottawa 2017 Bureau, Guy Laflamme, concerning Canada’s upcoming 150th birthday celebrations. The evening presented guests with an exclusive look into the future, as Guy discussed Ottawa’s role in the 2017 celebrations, as well as the various strategies, communication campaigns and considerations that all went into the planning of the yearlong event.
Some potential events that the Bureau has penned for the nation’s capital include the Juno Awards; a possible Grey Cup (CFL) and Winter Classic (NHL); a large scale Canada day celebration; an enhanced sound and light show; special National Museum exhibits; an outdoor video game event; and numerous redevelopments and openings, to name a few. Guy and his team realize that 2017 presents a major opportunity to enhance the economy by increasing tourism by 20% (over 1.75 million visitors), and as such their goal is to put together an entire year of programs to get people into the city. The vision for Ottawa 2017 is all about being big, bold, transformative, authentic and innovative, which will help transform Ottawa the old into Ottawa the bold.
Once again, IABC would like to thank our speakers, sponsors, attendees and volunteers for another fantastic event.
