Job Summary

As a member of the Public Affairs team, the Communications Specialist is responsible to provide communications services, which include: administering various communication programs and assets; researching/writing/editing/producing material for public affairs communications products in various formats; production of video, online and print materials; drafting communications plans and implementing strategies for public affairs initiatives/programs/projects; sourcing content for social media to maximize impact and usage, and providing communications support for various communications and media relations activities and events.

The incumbent supports the monitoring of government activities, reputational issues, and initiatives as they relate to the aviation sector and assists with position and strategy development on emerging issues, legislation and parliamentary committee work that may impact the Company’s reputation.

Working closely with business partners, the Communications Specialist will be expected to conduct research and analysis, develop key messages, work with suppliers and execute communications material for a wide variety of media, including email presentations, infographics, web, digital screens, videos, social media and digital and print newsletters and other publications.

Job Description


  • Provides communications advisory services and support to various business partners, including the development and execution of communications strategies and plans; project management and delivery of communications activities and initiatives; and preparation and coordination of various communications products and publications
  • Develops compelling content for online platforms to various target audiences
  • Builds and maintains strong working relationships with business partners to determine appropriate approaches for the development of effective content, writing-style, tone, timing, target segmentation, and products/channels to best achieve communications objectives
  • Identifies opportunities to collaborate with cross-functional communications teams as required to ensure effective service delivery
  • Provides analysis and recommendations on the impacts of proposed approaches on other functions, audiences and other planned communications activities (internal and external)
  • Identifies opportunities and provides recommendations for enhancing and improving the use of external communications channels and products
  • Conducts research and analyses on industry trends, emergent communications technologies and best practices; and provides management with recommendations on the implementation of new approaches/channels to best achieve communications objectives
  • Works closely with external suppliers/vendors, including graphic designers, printers, and video production companies
  • Coordinates the development and delivery of social media advertising; and other online recruitment initiatives
  • Supports the day-to-day social media activities including monitoring and responding to user on Company social media accounts
  • Sources social media content in support of the Company’s Employee Brand Ambassador Program
  • Provides support for the provision of media relations services including delivery of daily media scan, news wire distribution of news releases, ongoing subscriptions, updating the media section of the corporate web site, and monitoring trends in media relations activities
  • Coordinates monitoring of House of Commons and Senate proceedings and Parliamentary committees for information which may impact NAV CANADA. Helps keep track of progress of legislation, GR activities and MP outreach
  • Gathers information to respond to Parliamentary inquiries including constituent questions and correspondence from MP’s offices, Parliamentary questions, and government departmental inquiries. Drafts associated correspondence
  • Assists in the handling and development of responses to email enquiries from the public and media

Skills, Knowledge & Experience:


  • Strong presentation, writing and editing skills
  • Strong computer skills:
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office (e.g., Word, PowerPoint, Excel, Outlook, SharePoint)
  • Proficient with Adobe Suite (Acrobat, Photoshop, Illustrator)
  • Proficient with Social Media applications for Communications
  • Ability to effectively work in a team
  • Ability to quickly grasp and assimilate complex corporate and technical material and communicate effectively to a general audience
  • Ability to understand, absorb and convey complex information into relevant and compelling content for different internal audiences
  • Ability to produce high quality communications products/messaging under pressure and within tight deadlines
  • Ability to prioritize conflicting requests, manage projects simultaneously and negotiate tactfully and effectively with clients
  • Ability to multi-task, meet tight deadlines and shift priorities as required
  • Ability to proofread with a strong attention to detail

Knowledge & Experience

  • Minimum 5 years of experience in Communications or related field
  • Experience writing and editing a variety of corporate material such as articles, speeches, reports, biographies, presentations, website and social media content
  • Experience developing and implementing strategic communications plans
  • Experience developing and managing web site content, supporting digital strategies and monitoring, analyzing and providing recommendations using web-based analytics
  • Experience in working with various suppliers including designers, printers and video production agencies
  • Experience in government and media relations would be considered an asset
  • Experience in graphic design, digital photography, photo manipulation or videography would be considered an asset
  • Knowledge of communications principles, strategy development and project management
  • Knowledge of industry trends in communications with a focus on social media and other digital platforms, techniques and best practices
  • Knowledge of NAV CANADA mandate and role within the aviation industry
  • Knowledge of NAV CANADA business priorities and goals

Language Requirements:

  • Bilingual preferred

Working Conditions:

  • Standard office environment
  • Travel nationally may be required for particular projects and initiatives
